As 2009 is about to begin, I am hopeful that those sitting in decision making positions atop sport, both in their policies and actions, will reflect the wishes of most athletes – that doping is cheating and has no place in sport, and that zero-tolerance be the only policy.

2008 was a vintage year in athletics.  The highlight no doubt was the mind-boggling performance of Usain Bolt at the Beijing Olympics, along with a Jamaican track & field squad that stole the show.  Honorable mention also goes to the Russian pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva, who was undefeated outdoors in 2008 and set a world record of 5.05 meters in Beijing, successfully defending her Olympic gold medal.
